How To Eliminate Black Spot Algae From Your Pool

Discovering black spot algae in your pool can be disheartening, but understanding the root cause is the first step toward reclaiming your sparkling oasis. This stubborn algae is notorious for its resilience and can quickly turn your beautiful pool into an something much more unsightly. Chlorine is essential for maintaining a healthy pool environment, and insufficient levels create an ideal breeding ground for algae. Without adequate sanitation, algae spores that naturally enter the pool can easily take hold and multiply.

Another significant factor contributing to black spot algae is the presence of porous surfaces and cracks within the pool structure. Black spot algae thrive in these conditions, finding shelter in the nooks and crannies of your pool. These tiny crevices provide a perfect hiding place, protecting the algae from regular cleaning efforts and making them harder to eliminate.

You might think that draining the pool (which has its own set of problems, see here) and performing an acid wash will help. Draining the pool alone won’t solve the problem because black spot algae can also hide in the pipework, solar heaters, filter, and pump. This means that even after you acid-wash and refill the pool, the algae in your equipment will find its way back into the pool and start spreading again.

Is Black Spot Algae Harmful?

We all know that black spot algae can ruin the look of a pool, but is it harmful to humans? The algae itself will not cause illness which means that you can swim in a pool that has algae present. However, the black algae will encourage the growth of other, potentially dangerous, bacteria like E. coli and this in turn can make swimmers sick. On top of this, black spot algae attracts other unwanted pests like insects.

How to Eradicate Black Spot Algae

Fear not, pool enthusiasts! With the right approach and a bit of elbow grease, you can eliminate black spot algae and restore your pool to its former glory. Follow these steps to get rid of black spot algae:

  1. Turn Off Equipment: Begin by turning off your pool equipment to prevent any interference with the treatment process.
  1. Brush the Algae: Use a stiff brush to scrub the black spot algae. This step is crucial as it breaks the waxy coating that protects the algae, making the treatment more effective.
  1. Apply Treatment: Sprinkle a black spot algae treatment directly onto the affected areas. Be generous in your application to ensure thorough coverage.
  1. Let It Sit: Allow the product to sit on the algae for at least 6 hours, or better yet, overnight. This gives the treatment ample time to penetrate and kill the algae.
  1. Brush Again: After the treatment period, brush the pool surface vigorously with a stainless-steel brush to remove the dead algae.
  1. Add Focus Powercide: This powerful solution tackles black spot algae, green algae, and mustard algae. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results.
  1. Backwash and Rinse: Perform a backwash and rinse of your pool’s filtration system to remove any residual algae and treatment chemicals. Then, reset your equipment timers.
  1. Check and Clean the Cell: Ensure your pool’s chlorinator cell is clean and functioning correctly to maintain optimal chlorine levels.

Preventing Black Spot Algae: Proactive Measures

To keep black spot algae at bay, incorporate these preventative measures into your regular pool maintenance routine:

  • Regular Powercide Treatments: Add Focus Powercide every 12 weeks. This ongoing treatment will help prevent algae from reestablishing itself.
  • Clean Your Filter: Use a degreaser treatment regularly to keep your filter in top condition, ensuring it efficiently removes contaminants and prevents algae growth.
