Stains on your pool surface?

Stains on the surface of your pool can be unsightly. Staining in pools is caused by organic matter,  metals or long-term chemical imbalance of the pool water.

  • Organic stains are caused by leaves, seeds, nuts, sticks, tannins, and animal excrement most commonly from birds and possums. Most organic stains on the surface of a concrete based pool can be removed using quality granular chlorine sprinkled lightly over the area and brushed off readily.
  • Metal stains may be from rust, copper and manganese. These stains can be difficult to remove and require specialist products and applications. Not all metal stains can be removed effectively by chemical application.
  • Calcium stains, also known as scale can appear as either spots and/or lesions on the pool surface or as a calcium sheen over the entire pool surface. If calcium appears on a concrete based pool surface it can difficult to remove. In this instance prevention is better than cure; therefore, calcium hardness levels should be tested by a pool professional.
  • If your pool water is imbalanced over long periods of time, the pool is deemed corrosive or scale forming.  Make sure you regularly visit Master Pool Care with a water test.  This can help prevent stains and long-term scaling on the pool surface.  Photos are always super helpful for our staff to assist with their recommendations.
